Autofits vs West Pharmaceutical Services: Vial Seal Supplier Comparison

Two sets of pharmaceutical vial closure components arranged for a supplier comparison

These two suppliers are not the same shape of business. West Pharmaceutical Services is a US-headquartered, publicly listed containment and delivery company whose portfolio spans elastomeric stoppers, aluminium seals, polymer containers and self-injection devices. Autofits is an Indian manufacturer focused on one part of that picture: aluminium and aluminium-plastic vial seals and aluminium pilfer-proof caps. West also makes stoppers, which Autofits does not. For stoppers, polymer containers or a device platform, West is the one of the two that supplies them. If you are sourcing the seal against a documented quality system, the two compete directly on that component.

Every statement about West below is drawn from West’s own published pages and linked. Pricing, defect performance, capacity and customers are left out.

Key takeaways

  • Different scope. West is a broad injectable containment and delivery company; Autofits is a seals and caps specialist. That drives most of the differences below.
  • West’s published seals range is Flip-Off Seals, Flip-Off CCS Seals, Flip-Off Plus RU Seals, West Spectra Seals and Daikyo PLASCAP RUV Closures, per West’s seals page.
  • West also makes stoppers, including NovaPure, FluroTec barrier film and LyoTec platforms. Autofits does not make stoppers, so an Autofits seal is paired with a stopper the buyer sources from a stopper maker.
  • Both manufacture in India. West’s Sri City site makes injection moulded buttons and Flip-Off seals and is listed as ISO 9001, ISO 15378 and ISO 45001 certified; Autofits manufactures in Nashik, Maharashtra.
  • Autofits covers oral-format closures as well: pull-ring and tear-down seals and aluminium pilfer-proof (ROPP) caps.
  • Qualify on documents, not on size. ISO 15378 certification, a Drug Master File, controlled drawings and AQL data are the comparable evidence, and both suppliers should be asked for them.

Who each company is

West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc. was founded in 1923, is headquartered in Exton, Pennsylvania, and trades on the New York Stock Exchange as WST. Its corporate profile describes about 50 locations, including 26 manufacturing facilities, and a portfolio of stoppers and seals, syringe and cartridge components, self-injection systems and contract manufacturing through its West Vantage unit. It sells Daikyo Crystal Zenith cyclic olefin polymer vials, a technology licensed from Daikyo Seiko, Ltd.

Autofits Packaging Private Limited is an Indian manufacturer of primary packaging for pharmaceutical vials and bottles, incorporated in 2009, operating a 75,000 sq ft plant at MIDC Malegaon, Sinnar, Nashik, with 300+ staff. Its range is aluminium-plastic FlipTop seals in Optima, Pull Ring and Tear-Down lines, all-aluminium tear-off and tear-down seals, and aluminium pilfer-proof (ROPP) caps. It holds ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 15378:2017 certification and Drug Master File 18100.

Where West is the stronger fit

A proprietary coated stopper, a polymer container or a delivery device is a requirement for a supplier of West’s shape. Three cases are clear-cut.

The first is elastomer technology. West lists its own stopper platforms, including NovaPure stoppers, FluroTec barrier film stoppers and LyoTec stoppers for freeze-dried products, alongside Daikyo stoppers made under licence. A programme that has already qualified one of those compounds, or needs a barrier-film stopper for a sensitive biologic, is buying a formulation, and that formulation comes from its developer. Autofits does not make stoppers of any kind, so a buyer who wants stopper and seal from one company needs a supplier such as West.

The second is polymer primary containers. West’s Crystal Zenith page describes cyclic olefin polymer vials made to the exterior dimensions of ISO 8362-1 glass vials, closed either with press-fit PLASCAP closures or by crimping a stopper with Flip-Off CCS seals. Autofits does not make containers of any material. That decision is set out in Crystal Zenith polymer vials vs glass vials.

The third is multi-site continuity. A sponsor that wants the same component qualified at more than one plant on more than one continent will find that in a network of 26 manufacturing facilities, and cannot get it from a single-site supplier.

Where Autofits differs

Autofits competes as a seal and cap specialist: a wide size range on one flip-off line, oral and bottle closures, and a published specification per size. West also makes Flip-Off seals in India, at Sri City, so manufacturing location alone is not a difference between the two.

Size range on one line. The FlipTop Optima alone runs 13, 20, 28, 32 and 34 mm in bridge, button and flower designs, with maximum opening force specified from 30 N at 13 mm to 65 N at 32 mm, and glossy, matte, embossed or printed finishes.

Oral and bottle formats. The FlipTop Pull Ring and FlipTop Tear-Down are for presentations where the whole seal has to come off, and pilfer-proof ROPP caps in five sizes close threaded bottles.

Published numbers per size. Autofits states maximum opening force, aluminium thickness, bridge count and standard box quantity for each seal size, so a buyer can compare a drawing against a written figure before sampling.

How to run the comparison yourself

Ask both suppliers for the same six documents and compare those rather than company size. The list: the current ISO 15378 certificate for the manufacturing site, the controlled drawing for the exact seal size and design, the material declarations for alloy, lacquer and plastic, the sterilisation validation summary for the supply form you want, the AQL plan, and the regulatory filing reference you can cite in your own submission.

Those are the items an auditor asks about. The reasoning behind each is in vial closure supplier selection, and the origin question is covered in Indian vs global vial seal suppliers.

How this works in practice at Autofits

Polypropylene discs are moulded in-house on Toyo injection machines, components are washed on a fully automated line, ready-to-use lots are assembled in an ISO Class 8 cleanroom, and every seal passes high-speed camera inspection before packing. Aluminium is AA8011 to EN 15088:2005 with EN 10204 3.1 certification, the epoxy lacquer conforms to 21 CFR 175.300 and the polypropylene to 21 CFR 177.1520. Heavy metals are held to 100 ppm total for chromium VI, cadmium, mercury and lead. Standard AQL is critical nil, major not more than 2.5% and minor not more than 4%, tailorable to specification. The certificate set is on the quality page.

Frequently asked questions

Are Autofits and West Pharmaceutical Services direct competitors?

They overlap on aluminium and aluminium-plastic vial seals and diverge on most other lines. West also makes proprietary stopper platforms, polymer containers, syringe components and self-injection systems. For a buyer sourcing the seal, the two are comparable on that component; for a buyer sourcing a full containment and delivery platform, they are not equivalent.

Does West Pharmaceutical Services manufacture in India?

Yes. West’s locations page lists a site at Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, for production and distribution of primary packaging material, closures and seals, making injection moulded buttons and Flip-Off seals, and certified to ISO 9001, ISO 15378 and ISO 45001. It also lists a technology centre in Bengaluru and a sales office in Hyderabad. Autofits manufactures at a single site in Nashik, Maharashtra.

Is Flip-Off a brand or a generic term?

Flip-Off is a trademark of West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc., as stated on West’s seals page. The generic description in the standards is a cap made of an aluminium-plastics combination, covered by ISO 8362-6. Autofits brands its own range FlipTop and is not affiliated with West.

Does Autofits make stoppers as well as seals?

No. Autofits makes aluminium and aluminium-plastic vial seals and aluminium pilfer-proof caps only. West makes both stoppers and seals. A buyer using an Autofits seal sources the stopper separately, and the seal is matched to the stopper and vial neck by nominal size, then confirmed in a capping trial and integrity testing on the actual combination.

Can Autofits seals meet the same standards as a global supplier’s?

Autofits makes its aluminium-plastic seals to ISO 8362-6 and its all-aluminium seals to ISO 8362-3, under an ISO 15378:2017 quality system with Drug Master File 18100. Conformance is shown by certificates, drawings and test data rather than by supplier size or origin, so ask any supplier for those documents and assess them against your own specification.
