Autofits vs Datwyler: Vial Closure Supplier Comparison

The main difference is scope. Datwyler is a Swiss listed elastomer components group whose healthcare business develops its own stopper compounds and coatings and sells them with aluminium caps as one vial sealing system, from a multi-continent site network. Autofits is an Indian manufacturer of aluminium-plastic and all-aluminium vial seals and pilfer-proof caps, and does not make stoppers. If you need stoppers, a coated stopper platform or dual-site supply, Datwyler offers that. On the aluminium cap itself, the two can be compared like for like.
Every Datwyler statement below is drawn from Datwyler’s own published pages and linked. Pricing, defect rates, capacity and customers are left out.
Key takeaways
- Datwyler sells stoppers and caps as one system, covering serum, lyophilisation and infusion stoppers and aluminium caps on its vial sealing solutions page.
- Datwyler develops its own elastomer compounds and coatings, including OmniFlex fluoropolymer spray-coated stoppers. Autofits does not make stoppers; it makes the seal that crimps over one.
- Both manufacture in India. Datwyler has a healthcare plant in Pune that it described in 2022 as its largest production operation by volume; Autofits manufactures in Nashik, Maharashtra.
- Published cap sizes differ. Datwyler lists its vial stoppers and caps in 13, 20 and 32 mm formats and PrimeCaps in 13 and 20 mm. The Autofits FlipTop Optima runs 13, 20, 28, 32 and 34 mm.
- Both offer processed supply forms. Datwyler lists RFS, RTU and Rapid Transfer Port bags with steam or gamma sterilisation; Autofits supplies Regular, Ready-to-Sterilize and Ready-to-Use (gamma or ETO).
- Autofits also covers oral and bottle formats with pull-ring seals, tear-down seals and aluminium pilfer-proof (ROPP) caps.
Who each company is
Datwyler is a Swiss-headquartered group listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange since 1986, with 25 plants on four continents, serving healthcare, transportation and electronics, general industry, and food and beverage markets. Its about page describes a focus on system-critical elastomer components. For healthcare it lists stoppers, plungers, tip caps and aluminium caps for vials, prefilled syringes and cartridges, made across eight sites in Europe, North America and Asia under its Advanced and FirstLine manufacturing standards. Datwyler describes FirstLine as a fully integrated cleanroom environment with automated production cells, automated camera inspection and a validated washing process.
Autofits is a single-site manufacturer in Nashik, Maharashtra, making closures for injectable vials and oral-liquid bottles. The legal entity, Autofits Packaging Pvt. Ltd., was incorporated in 2009 and runs a 75,000 sq ft plant with more than 300 staff. Its lines are FlipTop seals (Optima flip-off, Pull Ring and Tear-Down), all-aluminium tear-off and tear-down seals, and pilfer-proof (ROPP) caps, certified to ISO 15378:2017 with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, and backed by Drug Master File 18100. Polypropylene discs are moulded on site and every seal is camera-inspected.

Where Datwyler is the stronger fit
Three requirements point to a supplier of Datwyler’s shape rather than to a seal specialist.
A coated stopper for a sensitive molecule. Datwyler’s OmniFlex stoppers carry a full-surface fluoropolymer spray coating that Datwyler positions for sensitive biologics and lyophilised products, to reduce extractables, leachables, rubber shedding and the need for added silicone oil. That is a proprietary elastomer technology, and Autofits makes no stoppers, coated or otherwise.
One developer accountable for compound and cap together. The stopper and the crimped cap form the barrier between them, and Datwyler develops its own compounds and sells them with its caps as a single vial sealing system. A buyer who wants the compound’s developer answerable for that pairing gets it there. The pairing question itself is covered in rubber stopper and aluminium seal pairing.
Multi-site supply of the same component. Datwyler states that its healthcare components are made at eight sites in Europe, North America and Asia, and that its PrimeCaps are made at more than one site to standardised dimensions. A sponsor that needs dual-site qualification on more than one continent cannot get that from a single-plant supplier.
Where Autofits differs
Autofits differs on neck sizes published for its flip-off line and on closure formats outside injectables. Both companies manufacture in India, so location is not a difference between them.
Neck size coverage. The FlipTop Optima runs 13, 20, 28, 32 and 34 mm, with maximum opening force specified per size from 30 N at 13 mm to 65 N at 32 mm. Datwyler’s published cap formats are 13, 20 and 32 mm. For a 28 mm or 34 mm neck, both sizes are standard in the Optima range; availability from Datwyler in those sizes would need to be confirmed with Datwyler.
Oral and bottle formats. Datwyler’s vial pages list flip-off, tear-off and hole caps. Autofits adds the FlipTop Pull Ring, where pulling the ring removes the entire seal, the FlipTop Tear-Down, used mainly for oral vaccine presentations, and ROPP caps for screw-neck syrup bottles.
How to compare them properly
Put the same request to both suppliers and judge the answers, not the brochures. For the cap, that means the site certificate, the drawing for your size and design, and declarations for the alloy, lacquer and polypropylene. Questions about the stopper (compound reference, compendial compliance, extractables profile) go to Datwyler or whichever company makes your stopper, since Autofits does not make one. Then add the sterilisation validation summary for the supply format, the AQL or inspection plan, and the filing you will reference.
Two more questions are worth asking any closure supplier: how the cap has been shown to run on a high-speed capping line at your target rate, and how container closure integrity was demonstrated on your specific vial, stopper and cap combination. The sourcing checklist is in vial closure supplier selection.
How this works in practice at Autofits
A Datwyler-to-Autofits comparison usually comes down to the cap, so the cap data is what Autofits puts forward. The shell is AA8011 aluminium to EN 15088:2005 with an epoxy lacquer to 21 CFR 175.300; the disc is polypropylene to 21 CFR 177.1520 from in-house Toyo moulding. Seals supplied Ready-to-Use are assembled in an ISO Class 8 cleanroom and sterilised by gamma or ETO, and release follows an AQL of critical nil, major not more than 2.5% and minor not more than 4%. Certificate numbers are on the quality page.
Frequently asked questions
Does Datwyler make aluminium vial caps as well as rubber stoppers?
Yes. Datwyler’s vial sealing page lists serum, lyophilisation and infusion stoppers together with aluminium caps: standard and PrimeCaps flip-off caps, total tear-off caps, centre tear-off caps and aluminium hole caps, in 13, 20 and 32 mm formats. Autofits makes only the aluminium and aluminium-plastic side of the closure and does not make stoppers.
Does Datwyler manufacture in India?
Yes. Datwyler operates a healthcare plant in Pune, which it described in 2022 as Datwyler Healthcare’s largest production operation by volume, and it added a second plant on the same campus that year. It stated then that its Essential, Advanced and FirstLine production standards all run at the Indian site. Autofits manufactures at a single site in Nashik, Maharashtra.
Which supplier offers more flip-off cap sizes?
On published information, Autofits lists more neck sizes on its flip-off line: the FlipTop Optima is offered in 13, 20, 28, 32 and 34 mm. Datwyler lists its vial caps in 13, 20 and 32 mm formats, with PrimeCaps in 13 and 20 mm. Published ranges change, so confirm current availability with each supplier.
What do RFS, RTU, RTP and RTS mean?
They describe how far a component has been processed before it reaches the filling line. Ready-for-sterilisation (RFS) and Ready-to-Sterilize (RTS) components are washed and packed for the customer to sterilise. Ready-to-Use (RTU) components are washed and sterilised by the supplier for direct entry to the aseptic area. In Datwyler’s usage, RTP refers to components packed in Rapid Transfer Port bags rather than standard bags.
Can an Autofits seal be used over a Datwyler stopper?
A seal is selected by the nominal size of the vial neck and stopper, so a 20 mm Autofits seal is made for a 20 mm stopper whichever company moulded it. Stoppers and seals from different suppliers are commonly paired. The combination still needs a check of the stopper flange against the seal drawing, a capping trial, and container closure integrity data on the actual vial, stopper and seal.
